1. Before exercising the right in the enforcement of the rules of the Board and before committing to and approving the residential plans, municipal, township and county residential building departments and their required personnel should be certified by the board of building standards as required.

2. Ask if the contractor is a member of the Better Business Bureau. Review the company’s performance and how any issues were resolved at www.bbb.org. If there is a history of multiple issues, this may throw a red flag on how the company may portray itself.

3. Ask for references that include past and current clients, particularly skim the the project remodels similar in scope and size to your project. Speak with current clients as well for recent information. Past work is definitely an important piece to the puzzle, but todays' work is what you will be receiving.

4. Make sure the contractor is fully equipped with liability insurance, which covers property damage, and workers’ compensation insurance, which covers accidents that happen to the person(s) on the job. Don’t risk hiring somebody who is not a fully insured contractor whose employee(s) could be seriously injured and or fatal while they are working on your home.

5. In the residential remodeling industry you get what you pay for, probably something you have heard your entire life still holds strong. If you’ve been meeting with contractors and the totals you have been receiving vary all over the place from high to low, pay attention closely because the quotes you receive should be in a general ballpark of each other. When receiving price totals, "If something seems too good to be true, that's because it probably is."

6. When meeting with different contractors, always trust your gut feeling never second guess your instincts. Are they paying full attention to your wants and needs? Do they follow through or do they let clients down? Are they caring and responsive when the customer has questions or concerns?
